Data Science
This workshop, led by GirlsCodeMonth's team, will cover an introduction to Python, basic statistics, and content about interpreting and displaying data. Participants will learn about statistics, data analysis, and interpretation, then apply their skills to real-world datasets such as medical imaging, COVID, female representation in the media. |
Computational Linguistics
LingHacks is partnering with GirlsCodeData to bring you a workshop about computational linguistics, the field of artificial intelligence that is applied to the synthesis and analysis of language and speech. This workshop will be led by Karina Halevy, the founder of LingHacks, an international nonprofit that has hosted hundreds of students for computational linguistics hackathons, workshops, and clubs. She is currently a sophomore at Harvard studying Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, and Linguistics. |
Internships
Girl Genius (@girlgeniusmag) is partnering with GirlsCodeData for a workshop on securing internships. This workshop will be led by founder and executive director of Girl Genius, Shivali Gulati (@shivaligulati_), who has gotten internships at Verizon, University of Arizona, SRI, and Safe Squad. In this workshop, Shivali will discuss how to cold email companies effectively, maximize your resume and her advice on getting internships during COVID-19. |
Karly houKarly Hou is a sophomore at Harvard studying CS, math, economics, and government. Previously, she interned at Two Sigma and NVIDIA, and her research at Stony Brook University was a Siemens Semifinalist. With her future work, she hopes to advance education, public health, ethical technology, and women’s rights. She is currently working on Wave Learning Festival (www.wavelf.org), a nonprofit combatting educational inequities exacerbated by the pandemic by providing free, live, and interactive courses, tutoring, and college/career support for 10k+ students around the world. In her spare time, Karly loves painting, photography, learning new languages, singing, powerlifting, and exploring the great outdoors!

caeley looneyHaving graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering in 2018, Caley now works full-time as a Mission Analyst for L3Harris Technologies where she supports their small satellite programs. Once the work day is over, she comes home and works on Reinvented Magazine. As Founder and President of this 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Caeley works to empower young girls to pursue STEM fields through the creation of the nation’s first ever print magazine written for girls in STEM. Outside of work and running a profit, Caeley is continuing to advance her education by pursuing her M.S. in Space Systems Engineering part-time at Johns Hopkins University online. On a less professional level, Caeley spends most of her free time running distances most people call crazy, knitting, and going on long walks on the beach with her dogs.

Julie MengJulie Meng is a sophomore at MIT studying biological engineering, CS, and brain and cognitive sciences. She currently researches language processing in the human brain, and more specifically, how prosody and lingual meaning interact during speech perception and production. She also co-organizes the MIT Science Olympiad Invitational, a national STEM competition for high schoolers, and MakeMIT, a free hardware hackathon for college students around the country. In her free time, she loves to bake, run, dance, and play the ukulele.

ROma patelRoma Patel is a PhD student at Brown University advised by Ellie Pavlick. Her research focuses on using natural language, in the way that humans do, to inform reinforcement learning models, that can allow situated agents such as robots to take actions and in the world and learn intelligent behaviours, as well as communicate with each other in natural language. Her work has received a best paper award at StarSEM. She has done research internships at Google AI (2019) and DeepMind (2020) on similar topics related to grounded language.

What will I gain from attending?
Learn the fundamentals of code and build your own project during the Workshop and datathon, and build a network during the Conference! This event is beginner-friendly, and will be a welcoming environment for all skill levels. Do I have to stay for the entire event?
No! Feel free to come for just one of our workshops or part of the day. There will be a lunch break in the middle of the day as well. However, keep in mind that some of the curriculum will build off of each other so we'd recommend you attend for as long as possible! What should I have?

Is there an age requirement?
Participants who are in grades 5-10 are welcome to attend. If you are not in this age range, please email us at girlscodemonth@gmail.com. Prerequisites?
No experience is necessary, and you can join from any location as the event is virtual! How much will it cost?
